Case Study
Beverly Horton, aged 37 from Thurso, has become Scotland’s first online divorcee.
Having recently paid for a separation agreement, Beverly found she was unable to afford a divorce. She commented: “When I asked for quote for a divorce from a solicitor I was told it would be almost £2000. I was also told it would take at least three months to complete. I’m a single parent with three children now so I just could not afford this.”
Bruce de Wert of Georgesons Solicitors, pioneer of MyScottishDivorce, the first fully automated online divorce service, had arranged for the sale of Beverly’s marital home and was therefore aware that she was separated with a completed separation agreement.
After learning that Beverly wanted to proceed with a divorce but was unable to do so due to financial constraints, Bruce offered her the opportunity to be the first test case for his newly launched online service.
Beverly said of the process: “It was really simple, I just filled in a couple of forms on the website and sent the children’s birth certificates and my marriage certificate to Mr de Wert. I provided him with a witness who also had to fill in a simple form online.
“I then went into the office to sign the affidavits along with my witness. These were then presented to the sheriff and that was it - I was divorced. From start to finish my divorce took only eight days. The service was excellent and I was informed every step of the way; it was very efficient and professional.”
When asked what she thought of the service provided by MyScottishDivorce Beverly said: “I would recommend the service to anyone looking to get a divorce but struggling with the cost, especially if they have children under the age of 16.
“It’s not only at an excellent price, it was quick and simple. When you have children to care for and you work full-time you don’t have three months to go through a stressful, long, drawn-out divorce.”
She continued: “It is a difficult time in a person’s life but this important part of the process was dealt with sensitively and I understood what was happening at every stage. I was very pleased with every aspect of the divorce procedure.”
Naz Lalmahamode, Beverly’s now ex-husband, was also very happy with how their divorce was handled, and commented: “The service provided by MyScottishDivorce was marvellous. I was amazed at how quickly it was all taken care of. Bruce worked in partnership with me to make sure everything was clearly explained and that there was no confusion.
“It was really important to me that things did not become drawn out. The new online service ensures a quick turnaround and I was very impressed.”
